Hi, y'all! My name is Brooke Bacon. My husband Ben and I are young, currently baby-less, and caught in the middle of renovating our first house. We do a lot of dumb stuff love trying new things... we hope you enjoy!
It all started when Ben decided to add up how much money we
were spending on rent… now, I am good at math – so I knew this would not end up
well. We live in Houston so the rent isn’t cheap, but it is also not super
expensive (I have friends in Cali and NY… yikes!). Well, when he was done
scribbling all over the back of the new RH spring catalog, he realized we could
purchase a new car every year (he is a Top Gear junkie)with the money we spent
on rent – money that we will NEVER. SEE. AGAIN. That started our frantic hunt
for our first… HOUSE!
Married for only 5 months at this point, we were both new
college grads (Gig Em Ags!) that were just starting our first jobs. Heck – I was just getting
into the “paying your bills on time every month” rhythm. We signed up for EVERY
single realtor email new home list in the Houston area. Every morning at 4:02AM
my phone would go off with all the new listings for the day. For a month
straight I think I woke up at 4:02AM and reviewed all the newly listed homes
then attempted to shake Ben awake if I found one I liked.
Long story short – buying a house was miserable and
stressful… especially since we had no money to pay for a house – waaaahhh?!
Luckily I have amazing credit (thanks mom and dad for being money Nazi’s and
making me get a credit card at 15 years old). Just days before our apartment
lease was up we moved into our dream house – beautiful 1980s, flower
wallpapered, hot pink countertop, vertical blinds, wheelchair stained carpet,
water warped laminate wood flooring, fluorescent lightening, gold fixture,
musty dream home. And we lived happily ever after – until I walked in the front
door, took one look around and turned to my very handsome, sweet, and
unfortunately oblivious husband and said “hey babe, you can like, tear stuff
down and build new stuff right?”…
Every day has been a new adventure, and we are thrilled to
share all of our projects that end in complete satisfaction and those that end
with us throwing a hammer through the wall or getting electrocuted. We are on a super tight budget
(like the kind where we spend virtually no money and just reuse what we find in
this old place… and my parents garage…), but you’d never believe us unless we
show you! We always have the future in mind – no one ever knows when something
may happen that will cause them to move. Very aware that we may not stay in this
house forever, we do every renovation with the mindset that we want to get more
for our house than what we bought it for. We make lists of renovations and what each of them costs us. We love being challenged and this is nothing short of
that! So for anyone buying a new – old house, if you just walked through your
door and said “OMG what did we just do?!”… we get it!
