One night last week (yes, at 10pm), I decided to dye some eggs for the Easter season. Although it was still snowing and 30 degrees outside, I was determined. I pulled out a carton of eggs and some spices, and I was more than excited with my beautiful outcome. And more-so than the gorgeous hues of reds, yellows, and lavenders, I was proud that my creativity in making an all-natural dye actually worked (I have my fair share of trial and error!). Here's what I did...!
In a few different cereal bowls I poured a couple of tablespoons of white vinegar, one of the following foods/spices, and enough water to cover the tops of the eggs.
- paprika
- chili powder
- red onion skin*
- pomegranate tea*
- coffee grounds
- saffron*
Spices indicated with an asterisk will need to be heated on the stove prior to dying the eggs in order to steep the color into the water. Once the color bleeds into the water, add the vinegar, and pour over eggs.
I let the eggs sit anywhere from 45 min to over night. The shades will vary within each bowl depending on how long you let them sit.
The best part about this is that you can guilt free let even the littlest kids touch and play with these dyes - and it won't be a (big) deal if they decide to drink them!
I wish Bentleigh was just a bit older, so I could use this as a fun-natural-food learning experience... oh, well, next year.
